Undergraduate Student Government Senate voted Tuesday night to replace one of five referendum questions on the USG/ARHS election ballot.
The ballot will now include a question about a potential Fall Semester break in place of a question on whether students have adequate access to personal computers.
The question asks if students want to change the semester calendar to include a fall break and lists several possible days. The idea for a fall break has been researched by the Commonwealth Campus Student Government and USG, said Senate Vice President Eric Smith.
The Fall Semester is 15 weeks, plus an additional week for exams, said town senator Brent Watson. Three days on the current calendar -- Labor Day and two days for Thanksgiving -- are alloted for breaks.
Other questions address topics including Whether or not to limit University punishment for possessing marijuana to no more than one semester of disciplinary probation; whether or not students are satisfied with their adivisor's performance; if the University adequately prepares teaching assistants for classroom responsibilty; if a manadatory student fee should be charged to help fund Ritenour Health Center.
Watson said the lack of a substantial fall break causes fatigue and academic difficulty. A scheduled break would help alleviate these problems, he added.
The questions were switched because the fall break issue is more wide reaching than the issue of personal computers since all students do not use the University's computer facilities, Watson said.
The motion was passed by the Senate after debate on which ballot question to replace with the fall break question. The majority of the Senate favored the addition.
"I think it's a good idea to take this project and get student opinion on it," Smith said.
