3 women divers at NCAA Prequals

Collegian Sports Writer

The women's swimming team has four representitives for NCAA Championships next week at Indianapolis. Today and tomorrow the diving team will try to qualify three more.

Junior Amy Schmidt and seniors Kristin Tressler and Lara vonSeelen will be competing at the NCAA Diving Prequalifying Meet at Harvard's Blogett Pool. They will look to join Christy Rourke, Janet Worobel, Heather Nicholson and Fran McDermid, who will compete in the 800-yard freestyle relay in the NCAAs. Schmidt will be attempt to qualify in the NCAAs for the second consecutive year. Last year, Schmidt placed third on the 1-meter board in the prequals and went on to finish 18th nationally.

Schmidt is coming off a disappointing performance at the Eastern Championships. Going in as the defending champion on the 1-meter board, she finished fifth this year and placed fourth on the 3-meter.

"I wasn't very happy with my performance," Schmidt said. "I have to be more consistent if I hope to qualify for NCAAs."

While Schmidt will be looking to compete in her second national championships, vonSeelen and Tressler will try to qualify in their first. Tressler will only be competing on the 3-meter, and Coach Craig Brown feels she has a solid list of dives.

"If she gets in the top 10, I'll be real happy," Brown said.

If someone is peaking at the right time it is vonSeelen. The 3-meter champion at Easterns dove well down the stretch of the regular season, and will try to continue her wave of momentum. Even though her strength is on the high board, she would like to qualify on the low board as well.

"I've worked on strength in my legs to get a little more height (on the 1-meter)," vonSeelen said. "I've never felt this confident."

The divers will face the same type of competition they faced at the Eastern Championships. Pittsburgh's two outstanding divers, Christa Ratiff and Donna Flatch, were almost non-exsistent at Easterns. But opponents will be hard pressed to keep them down this weekend.

Cornell's Jackie Cadwalder, who surprised everybody by winning the 1-meter at Easterns, and Princeton's outstanding freshman Stacey Cooper, who came in third, will also be strong favorites to qualify. Even though they're the host, it would be a surprise if Harvard qualifies a diver for NCAAs. Penn State outscored the Lady Crimson 29-6 on the 1-meter at Easterns, which helped the Lady Lions take the lead after the first day.
