ISC candidates run unopposed; publicity position remains open

Collegian Staff Writer

Positions on International Student Council executive committee are not hotly contested.

At last night's election, three out of five races had only one candidate running. And one position, publicity director, remained vacant at the end of the evening.

Running unopposed, Bilel Jamovssi, vice president of the Arab Social and Culture Club, was elected ISC president.

"I hoped I would be running with someone else. But I'm really glad to see confidence among the ISC members," Jamovssi said about his victory. The vote was 15-1 with one abstention.

Jamovssi said his goals as president include coordination of efforts among executive committee officers, ISC members and organizations outside of the ISC.

Arlene Liang was voted ISC vice president. In her campaign speech, she recommended having more outreach activities that create international awareness and understanding in communities beyond the University.

Lovay Chamra and Akram Abdennadher were elected ISC treasurer and secretary, respectively.

"I (hope) to find all the tricks and loopholes to provide money from the University for all ISC organizations," Chamra said.

After losing to Liang in the vice presidential race, Adel Benabdemour was elegible to run for publicity director. According to the ISC Constitution, candidates who lose in the race they were nominated for can run for positions voted on later in the evening.

Although running unopposed, Benabdemour failed to win the majority necessary to elect him to office. Newly-elected president Jamovssi decided to call a special election at a later date to resolve the issue.

Some ISC representatives objected when the elections committee refused to accepts nominations from the floor to challenge Benabdemour. The ISC constitution states that nominations from the floor will not be accepted if there are already nominees.

"(The elections committee) should let more people participate . . . and let the people make the decision," said Uzma Aslams of the Pakistan Forum.

Ginne Miller, a member of the elections committee, said, "The assembly did not express agreement with (Aslams)."

Aslams said the elections committee should encourage more people to get involved. In three of the five races, candidates ran unopposed.

Referring to impeachments and resignations plaguing the executive committee last year, Aslams said, "I hope the new committee will work together and improve the image of the ISC."
