Skating club polishes skills at Ice Pavillion

Collegian Sports Writer

While the majority of students on campus spend their Sunday mornings recuperating from Saturday night festivities, a select group of students spend their Sunday mornings improving their skating skills.

The skating club, which consists of approximately 20 members, allows individuals to practice their skating at the Ice Pavillion. The skating club meets every Sunday morning and Monday evening throughout the fall and spring semesters. Each skating session lasts an hour.

Robin Marcus (senior-biology), who has been the president for 2 1/2 years, said the club is not used by students only. Although only six student members skate on Sunday, non-students, both adults and children, tend to skate on Mondays, Marcus said.

"I take lessons once a week and come to the club sessions," Jeff Siegel (junior-computer engineering) said. He also pointed out that, "Sundays are a bad time for most students to come out to the rink, so you won't get much of a turnout."

Marcus added that the club possesses a wide range of skaters.

"We get all levels of skaters," she said. "We have beginners to well-advanced skaters."

According to Marcus, members of the club avoid the crowds of the public skating sessions.

"Since the club is mostly made up of students, there is no worry of a young kid doing triple jumps in front of you," she said.

Marcus added that club members also save money in the long run.

"There is a $60 yearly fee for all club members as opposed to the $6 hourly charge for an open session."

Although no members of the Icers skate with the them, Marcus said some club members use hockey skates. However, she pointed out that the club is more geared to figure skating."

Contrary to other University organizations and clubs, the skating group has no meetings. The club only meets on the ice rink, Marcus said. The club, however, does travel to the Ice Skating Institute of America annually. The ISIA sponsors a recreation competition for skaters across the country.

Last year, Penn State sent three skaters to Ohio State and placed fourth in the team competition. The skaters will make a return trip to Columbus this year.

Also, on April 26-27, the skating club will host "Ice Rhythms" at the Ice Pavillion. The show is a national competition that will feature skating clubs from across the country.

Marcus, the assistant director of "Ice Rhythms", said it will involve "members of the Icers, adult skaters, Physical Education classes, and group lesson skaters."
