Baking troops
I am tired of people emphasizing the damage in Baghdad. Yes, it is terrible that civilians are injured and killed. Yes, the war should cease and all the troops come home. But remember it is Saddam who is intentionally targeting civilians in Tel Aviv and Saudi Arabia. Once a war begins it must be fought on its own terms. Steve Roy in his letter talked about psycho-social targeting. It is Iraq that is using this technique. They are the ones who dumped oil into the gulf. It is they who continually threaten chemical warfare. The U.S. lead forces have shown remarkable restraint in choosing targets and I, for one, commend them for it. President Bush may have forced this war. We probably shouldn't have such a large contingency of troops in the gulf. These issues can and should be debated. But the military's targeting policy is not at fault. I agree that if the United States wanted, it could devastate Baghdad and end this war tomorrow. But that is not the path we are taking, thankfully. Much will be written about this war in the months to come. I'd like to believe that our troops' actions will remain above reproach.
