Defending Parkhill
Shame on The Daily Collegian for dignifying statements made by Wayne Jackson. Mr. Jackson seems to be curious as to why Coach Parkhill would be on a 900-line with other coaches like Jerry Tarkanian of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Maybe I can help you out. Maybe because Penn State was one of only 32 teams to win 45 games from 1988-1990. Duke, Oklahoma and UNLV were some of the other schools. Maybe it is because, unlike many coaches, Bruce Parkhill does not cheat. Or, maybe it is because he recruits players that are Academic All-Americans and not Prop-48s. Or maybe he is on the phone lines because he has the respect of his players, officials and, most importantly, his peers. That is clout! Last season there were only three teams in the Top 100 who ended their season with a win . . . UNLV, Vanderbilt and PSU. That is the big time. Wayne, I think you are confused. Penn State games are "sell-outs," not its fans. If the team is not big enough for you, leave your ticket for the more loyal fans, pack up your band-wagon and go to Las Vegas. They seem to be the only team good enough for you. If that doesn't sound like something you want to do, I have another suggestion. Keep your ass at home!
