Promising to make the Undergraduate Student Government Academic Assembly more visible in the University, Shannon Burke (junior-elementary education) was elected as the assembly's new president at last night's meeting.
Burke, who has held the position of vice president for the past year, will officially begin her duties at the assembly's March 11 meeting, replacing Scott Golla.
In her candidacy speech Burke said she thought she was the best person for the position because of her experience and exposure to students concerns.
"I have worked very closely with Scott, several academic committees and the circle of people involved in academic concerns," Burke said. "And I already know a great deal about what the job involves."
Burke is currently president of the College of Education's Student Council, a faculty senator, a resident assistant and the undergraduate student representative for the Non-Discrimination Policy Review Committee, which heard testimony regarding the sexual orientation clause earlier this month.
Also elected were Suzanne Harnett (junior-accounting) for vice president and Tracy Lewis (junior-liberal arts) for assistant vice president.
The assembly also called a special meeting for tonight to vote again on changes to the USG elections code which was rejected a second time by the USG Supreme Court.
