MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Against West Virginia on Saturday, Susan Robinson proved once again why she is one of the finest women basketball players in the nation.
In the second half, the Lady Lions' 30-20 halftime lead was slowly being wittled down by the Mountaineers. And at the 17:15 mark, a Rosemary Kosiorek 3-point jumper cut the lead to 34-33. That's when Robinson stepped her game up a notch.
Robinson's show enabled the team to defeat West Virginia, 77-60, and raise its record to 24-1 overall and 15-1 in the Atlantic 10.
She nailed a jumper the next time down the court to stop the five-point West Virginia run and increase the Lady Lion lead to 36-33.
After Lynn Dougherty hit a 3-pointer, Kosiorek countered once more for the Mountaineers to cut the lead to 39-35 with 15:50 left in the game.
More Robinson.
From the top of the key, she hit a 3-pointer to once again counter the Mountaineers. A little under two minutes later, Robinson put back a layup and the Penn State lead was now 48-35.
After a West Virginia timeout, Robinson continued her offensive domination, hitting another 3-pointer at 12:52 to increase the lead to 52-37. One minute, 10 seconds later, Robinson scored on another layup. The lead was now 17 with Robinson making West Virginia's run a distant memory.
"(Robinson is) someone who's smart enough to realize what is going to make her game go and what's not going to make her game go," Coach Rene Porltand said. "She realised that Tanya (Garner) was struggling and it was time for her to be a captain."
"Susan played very well in the second half," West Virginia coach Scott Harrelson said.
In that 6:13 stretch in the second half, Robinson scored 13 points to quell the Mountaineers. But Robinson was also a force on the boards, snaring 12 rebounds for the game, including eight on the defensive end. Robinson ended up scoring 25 points in the game, hitting on 11-of-19 shots. That performance marked the 38th double-double of Robinson's career.
Robinson's second half was even more impressive considering the fact that Robinson hit on just three-of-seven shots for six points in the first half. The team shot just 26.5 percent in the opening session.
"Rene said you (the team) are shooting awful but just keep shooting the ball becuase you are open," Robinson said. "And have confidence in taking the shots becuase they are going to go in."
"In the second half, she did a real nice job of seeing what was available and since her game is so versatile, whatever you leave her open for she's going to take it," Porltand said.
Maybe Robinson, a Center Point, W.Va. native, wanted to impress her hometown crowd for the last time. Since Penn State is moving to the Big Ten, the two teams have not scheduled any future games.
But both Portland and Robinson downplayed the fact.
"She has the same emotions for this game that she does at home against anybody. She just laces them up and plays," Porltand said.
"We haven't played that great down here so it doesn't really matter," Robinson said.
Notes: Mimi Griffin, a CBS women's basketball analyst, said the Lady Lions will not make the Four Final. Griffin said the teams making up the Final Four will be among the following: Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, North Carolina State and Stanford. Griffin made her predictions at halftime of the Tennessee-Texas game Saturday.
