Over the weekend, both at home and on the road, the women's track team excelled.
A handful of Penn State coaches and athletes competed Friday in The Athletic Congress National Championships at Madison Square Garden. Coach Teri Jordan took five Lady Lions to compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday while the remainder of the team stayed home to compete in the Penn State Last Chance Invitational at the Indoor Sports Complex.
Stacy Frank ranked fifth overall at the TAC Championships in the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 47'10". Back at home at the Last Chance Invitational, she had a season best performance, throwing 49'1½" to place first.
"I'm tired. Having two important meets in a row plus the trip back and forth really wears you out," Frank said.
This was the second year Frank has made it to TAC but the first time she made finals, she said.
"Hopefully, next year I'll be bringing home a medal," Frank said.
The Lady Lions' assistant coaches had a good showing at TAC as well. Robyne Johnson placed third in the triple jump with a 42'9" mark. Teressa DiPerna ranked ninth in the 800 meters with a 2:13.7. Lady Lion Michelle Thompson placed sixth, just behind Frank in the 20-pound throw, with a 46'9".
Jordan said she was pleased with the results of the Notre Dame Invitational. Wendy Nelson earned eighth in the 3,000-meter run with a lifetime-best 9:46.01. The two-mile relay team placed fourth with a 9:06.37. The squad -- Shelley Mitchell, Amanda Dudley, Laurie Morrow and Dana Dougan -- missed the nine-minute NCAA qualifing time by six seconds. The squad has one more chance to qualify for NCAAs -- at this weekend's ECAC Championships at Yale.
At the Last Chance Invitational, Penn State placed first in every event that a Lady Lion entered.
Carol Davis won the two-mile run with a 11:22.3. Mary Honka placed second with a 11:32.8. Leslee Martin (5:04.4) placed first in the one mile and was followed in second and third by Jenny Weaver (5:04.4) and Sanda LaPlaca (5:27.6), respectively.
In the 1,000 meters, Toni Gomez placed first with a 2:46.9 and Cesca Lyons finished second in 2:49.9. In the 880-yard event, Dawn Eidson placed first with a 2:16.0. Leslie Hummer ranked first overall in the 220-yard event running 26.6 seconds.
Pam Connell, running unattatched, earned first in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.2 seconds. Perpetua Domitrovich ran the 55-meter dash in 7.71 seconds for first place. DeAnn Martz finished 2½ seconds later for second.
Alicia Porro placed first in the pentathlon scoring 2965 points. Melynda Heckman (2939) and Dana Toscano (2676) were second and third, respectively.
