Grapplers face Bloomsburg in final dual meet of season

Collegian Sports Writer

The wrestling team won't field its strongest lineup against Bloomsburg tonight, but Coach Rich Lorenzo believes giving some wrestlers a rest from competition and others a rest from cutting weight will help the team psychologically.

"I'm making a decision as a coach as to what's going to be the best for our tournament team," Lorenzo said.

Tonight's match, the final dual meet of the season, will start at 7:30 in Rec Hall. Graduating seniors Chad Dubin and Jason Suter will be honored before the meet.

Two starters -- 126-pounder Bob Truby and 150-pounder Tim Wittman -- will probably not wrestle. Truby is still not 100 percent after having the flu last week, and Wittman wrestled live for the first time at Wednesday's practice.

Both wrestlers will weigh in a class above to give the Lions flexibility if they need it.

"I think they'll both benefit by not having to cut weight and working real hard at practice (today) and over the weekend," Lorenzo said.

Troy Sunderland will again wrestle up a class at 150 in place of Wittman, and Jeff Prescott will wrestle up at 126. This makes the team weaker at 118 and 142, but Lorenzo said the team and the individual wrestlers will benefit more from the revised lineup next weekend at the EWL Touranment.

"It's not like (Sunderland and Prescott) need to drop down to see how they feel at that (lower) weight," Lorenzo said. "They'll have another week of rest. Then they only have to make weight two more weekends, and that can really excite you."

Sunderland doesn't feel as strong wrestling at 150 because he lost strength when he dropped to 142 in January; he does, however, like not having to cut lots of weight. Sunderland said he weighed 150 pounds after Wednesday's practice and feels better than he did in January.

"Troy's as low has he's ever been this year," Lorenzo said.

Fred Koberlein and Mike Kraft wrestled off at yesterday's practice to determine the starter at 190; Kraft defeated Koberlein, 6-2, to earn the start for Tuesday's match against Clarion.

Frank Buchman, who dislocated his foot at the national dual meet championships, may be ready to return for the EWL Tournament, but Lorenzo said he will have to wrestle off both Koberlein and Kraft to reclaim his starting spot.

Lorenzo is concerned because Buchman is not needed to wrestle just one match; he could have up to three matches in the EWL Tourament and up to five at the NCAA Championships two weeks later.

Tonight Lorenzo wants each wrestler to concentrate on wrestling a perfect match; each one knows that he needs to work on before heading into the postseason tournaments.

"I've got to work on getting my guy out of position," 167-pounder Dave Hart said. "I still feel a little sluggish."

"I need to work a little on top, loosen upon my feet," Sunderland said. "I've got to take better shots; I've been holding back a little."

Bloomsburg (13-2-1, 3-2-1 EWL) defeated the Lions (17-5-1, 5-1) last year, their second EWL loss of the season. Last year's team was comprised mostly of seniors; this year many freshman are in the starting lineup. Lorenzo said Bloomsburg will be strongest in the upperweights.
