The boxing club travels to Gettysburg tomorrow for what Coach Bill Wrable calls "pretty critical tuneups" for regional competition.
Nine boxers will make the trip to face Central Connecticut, Lock Haven, Virginia Military Institute and Shippensburg in addition to the host team at 8 p.m. in Bream Gymnasium.
Of the nine boxers, only three of them will definitely compete in the open bouts (three or more collegiate bouts), although some novices might move up to fill the card, Wrable said. After this weekend, most of the team will qualify for open competition, but the team has only one more match, at Central Connecticut, before regionals.
Due to the proximity of regional competition, Wrable has already started making some changes.
"We have to get down to one man per weight class for regionals," he said. "I figured out where I want people to help the team. I made a few changes, some up, some down."
One of those changes was moving Kevin Cull from 172 to 165. Cull (2-0) is scheduled to meet Sean Gilece of VMI.
Cull said he was looking forward to fighting at 165, since that is closer to his natural weight.
"I have to stay under control and establish my jab early," Cull said. "But it also depends on which way he's going to box."
Jim Ustynoski (172), who beat Gilece at the PSU Invitational, said Cull-Gilece would be an interesting matchup.
"Sean's tall and has a long reach, so he was outjabbing me. It will be interesting because they both have the same style. It will be a very even matchup."
Ustynoski (2-0) will face Gettysburg's Shawn Kyle.
"The coach thinks I have more power, so I have to keep coming forward. If I keep him against the ropes, it will be to my advantage," Ustynoski said.
Walter Blake (127) is the only other boxer who will definitely have an open bout. Blake, who defeated national champion Dave Machamer of Lock Haven in his first collegiate bout at the PSU Invitational, is scheduled to box VMI's Chris Cruze.
"I just heard he's an excellent boxer with a lot of power," Blake said of Cruze, who knocked down Machamer but eventually lost the decision at the VMI Invitational. "I just want to go out there and outbox him and outmaneuver him. It's the same way I beat Machamer -- I gave him angles and frustrated him."
Either Bob Schirf or John Kostik will face Dennis Bundins of VMI at 190. Who Penn State's boxer will be depends on whether Schirf gets permission from a doctor to compete with a fractured nose.
"He's been around a while," Wrable said of Bundins. "He's got a .500 record, and he's a pretty fair boxer. He's a good test for anyone."
At heavyweight, Seth Lyter will take on VMI's Eric Harrison.
"He's big, about 6'5", 246," Wrable said of Harrison. "Lyter's going to have to be quick with him."
Other matchups include Eric Haugh (112) versus Don Buckley of Lock Haven, Jay Neville (147) versus Jim Parncutt of Shippensburg, Ben Lewis (147) versus Bill Newland of Gettysburg and Matt Marino (180) versus Mike Martin of VMI.
