This week is a very special one in Black history, as one of the greatest African-American leaders was assassinated back on Feb. 21, 1965 in Harlem, NY. Twenty-six years after that fateful day, young and old have sought to understand Malcolm X. Today begins the two day symposium on Malcolm X's life and his assassination, "Malcolm X: A Life, Lessons and Legacies." This first year event is being sponsored by Black Caucus and the Office of Religious Affairs at 7 tonight in the HUB Ballroom. It was brought about in an effort to educate ourselves and better understand a man who is greatly misunderstood by the majority of the U.S. populace. Tonight, we begin with a panel discussion about four of his legacies: cultural, economic, to women and to students. The scholars have prepared for this night and are ready to share their understanding of Malcolm X in the aforementioned areas. They are James B. Stewert, vice provost for underrepresented groups, LaVerne Gyant, Black Studies program interim director, Vernis Welmon, Smeal College of Business assistant dean, and Vanessa Wright, Penn State NAACP chapter president. Come share in our search for a clearer and more proper understanding of Malcolm X. We invite the University to this symposium and look forward to your participation in the pursuant discussion.
Gerard Louison
vice president, Black Caucus
