Undergraduate Student Government members will travel to Harrisburg Monday to demonstrate student concern for Penn State funding, Senate President Kurt Derr announced at a meeting last night.
The state Senate Majority Caucus will hold a hearing Monday afternoon to discuss the future of Penn State funding, said USG Executive Coordinator Leslie Osborn.
USG President J.P. Muir and Vice President Sue Williams will attend, along with several USG senators and executive assistants, Muir said.
After hearing the Senate's intentions, USG will be able to prepare a lobbying strategy, Osborn said.
"Its mostly to go down and show our concern . . . and to learn what's going on in the proceedings," Osborn said.
However, USG members will try to talk with senators after the hearing, Derr said.
Muir said the trip will be a chance to make contacts with state senators and present them with students' funding concerns.
USG members will tell state senators "some real life stories of what's going on," Muir said, such as the fact that many students must work part-time jobs to support themselves through school.
Muir and Williams promised to lobby for University funding in their campaign last March, but this is the first trip they have planned.
"Now that they're dealing specifically with Penn State the timing is right to go down," Muir said.
The state House of Represenatatives will meet Wednesday to discuss higher education funding, but its discussion will address funding of all state public, state-related and private institutions, Osborn said. Monday's Senate hearing will focus specifically on Penn State, she said.
