Dancers contemplate future marathons while recovering

Collegian Staff Writer

Recovering from total exhaustion can be difficult and time-consuming, but is necessary for dancers in last weekend's Interfraternity/Panhellenic Council Dance Marathon.

"I woke up after 14 straight hours of sleep," said Steve Davis (senior-chemical engineering) yesterday afternoon. "I am not necessarily tired -- just physically worn out."

Davis, like other participants, said he was "in another dimension" after the two-day event, but insisted that dancing was "definitely worth it."

While dancers were happy that they survived the entire 48 hours, some were uncertain if they would dance in the marathon again.

"I cannot say that I would do it again, at least not until I have totally recovered, but I would say that I am very glad I danced," Davis added.

Nicole Persic (junior-elementary education) agreed she probably would not dance again. She said she will probably give that chance to other members of her sorority, Phi Mu, 2 Hiester.

"I don't think it has hit me yet that I actually made it through," Persic said. "At this point, I think I would like to get involved in Morale or some other aspect of organization, and I would like to see some of my friends dance."

Persic said she slept for 15 hours, but "was kind of pumped up for a few hours" after the event.

"I was tired, but I didn't fall asleep for a few hours," she said. "Even though I was up all weekend, I don't feel that bad today."

Dancers used yesterday morning as a recovery period and made preparations ahead of time to compensate for missed classes and work.

"I had a test scheduled for (Monday) which I arranged to take on Friday," Greg Timko (senior-art) said. "I told the teacher that I wouldn't be in class, and I got the notes from some of my friends."

Many dancers said when they told their instructors they would miss class after the marathon they supported them, but cautioned the dancers to catch up on all the missed work and provide "proof of participation."

Erin Walsh, a teaching assistant for French 3 classes, said none of her students told her they participated in the event, but that she supports the dancers and respects their need to recover from the event.

"I would have asked them to provide proof that they actually danced and told them to make sure they catch up on all the work," Walsh said. "Assuming that what (her students) actually did was dance -- I fully support them."
