ARHS to make posters with gulf information

Collegian Staff Writer

After an attempt to end the project, the Association of Residence Hall Students voted last night to produce posters and flyers to distribute to students with information about the Persian Gulf War.

The flyers and posters will list phone numbers and addresses for support groups, addresses where students can write to anyone in the gulf and addresses for students who have family members stationed in the gulf, said Tracey Farmer, a Centre Halls Representative who was also on the information gathering committee.

The flyers will also contain information about what students can do if a draft was to be reinstated, Farmer said.

"It's kind of a vague overview -- really general -- about draft counseling and stuff," she said.

The information will be distributed in two different forms: posters that will be given to resident assistants to post in their dorms and smaller yellow flyers that students can request from their RAs.

The yellow sheets will also carry a drawing of a ribbon -- an addition that had caused some heated debate at past council meetings and was one of the main reasons the project was delayed for almost five weeks.

Farmer originally moved to scrap the project because she said the council fought too much over the design of the flyer.

However, ARHS President Melissa Pressler said it was important to continue with the project because of the impending ground war.

"More students are going to be affected than we realize," Pressler said.

The council voted 3-11-1 against terminating "Operation Desert Support."

Kevin Howard, East Halls representative, said he has a cousin stationed on the USS Princeton -- a missile cruiser that hit a mine in the Persian Gulf yesterday. He said he had trouble finding the right phone number to call to get information about his cousin and that the information on the flyer will help many people.

"If it helps just one person, it's worth it," Howard said.

The posters and flyers are expected to be ready by next Monday.
