Finally, a break from the travel.
Many of the road-weary Penn State track athletes definitely used this weekend's home meet to rest.
But they also wanted accomplish two goals: win the home dual meet with Shippensburg and Millersville and qualify as many athletes as possible for the IC4As.
Well, one thing happened for sure. The Lions shipped the Red Raiders back to Shippensburg, 83-44. But not many people nailed the needed times to qualify.
"This place is not the easiest place to run. Qualifying depends on the facility. We want to send our athletes to the best places so they can get the time," Coach Harry Groves said.
But the meet still was a success because it gave different people opportunities to run certain events against decent competition.
"Overall the meet was good for everybody. It had good competition, even though we didn't qualify many people," Groves said.
However, four distance runners didn't get their R and R in State College, as the frequent flier foursome traveled to Boston University to try and get their 4x400 relay team into the NCAAs.
And they left successful, as the team of Joe Stegbauer, Bob Hamer, Aidan O'Reilly and Doug Walter nipped Dartmouth's squad by .48, winning the race in 7:27.51.
O'Reilly ran a strong third leg and Walter outkicked Dartmouth's anchor as the Lions won the race.
At the Greenberg Sports Complex, the distance medley relay team missed the standard by a mere three seconds. The team of Rob Goff (880), Jon Strange (440), Andy Scott (¾ mile)and Mike Crescenzi (mile) ran it in 10:14.34.
Dave Crowe ran the rare three-mile race in a Complex record of 14:20.4. Brian Kelley long jumped 22'4"; Jerry Robinson ran the 440 in a quick 51.3; Kevin Cripanuk high hurdled the 55 meters in 7.70; Phil Melott won the mile in 4:18.6; Jon Strange ran the 500 in 1:06; and R.B. Caldwell did the 1000 in 2:33.
In the field events, while shot putter Phil Caraher was out with the flu, Mason Ternay pole vaulted 15 feet, and Mitch Stetter won the high jump.
