Next to 'Last Chance' for trackwomen

Collegian Sports Writer

Finally, the women's track team is getting back together.

For the past month, some Lady Lions have competed separate from the team. They performed individually or in groups at invitationals from Florida to Nebraska. But this Sunday the team will compete as a whole at the George Mason Last Chance Invitational in Fairfax, Va.

"Everyone who is healthy will compete," Coach Teri Jordan said. "Most of us are well, but I can't say we're at 100 percent."

Jordan said she was hopeful the team would qualify a few more athletes for ECAC or NCAA Indoor Championships at this weekend's invitational. She is confident that the runners of the 800-, 1,000- and 3,000-meter events will qualify.

Sickness is not always the reason an athlete doesn't compete. Melynda Heckman is not competing in the pentathlon this weekend because she said she feels the long jump pit at George Mason isn't any good.

"I should be able to qualify at the home meet next week," Heckman said.

Shelley Mitchell is running in the 55-meter hurdles, the 800-meter event and the 4x400-meter relay. Mitchell says she is trying for a 2:12 in the 800-meter run and she is optimistic about the other events.

"I think we will qualify in the 4x400. Practices have been going really well. Now we just have to run in the meet," Mitchell said.

High jumper Sandra Bosnar said she is only one height away from qualifing for ECACs; however, foot problems may hinder her performance.

"I'm at 5'4½". I need to clear the next hight of 5'6½" to qualify," Bosnar said.

The Lady Lions have two more meets before indoor championships are held, this Sunday's invitational and the Lady Lion Last Chance Invitational next weekend. They are called "Last Chance" because they are the teams' last chance to qualify for championships.

Thus far, 11 Lady Lions and two relay squads have qualified for 18 events at ECACs. Mitchell, Leslie Lippincott, Alicia Porro, Wendy Nelson, Jenny Weaver, Leslee Martin, Kim Kessell, Jen Crouch, Stacy Frank, Michelle Thompson and Jacky Brown are the present individual qualifiers. The 4x800-meter relay squad -- Dawn Eidson, Mary Beth Powers, Dana Dougan and Laurie Morrow qualified with a 9:06.5. The distance medley relay team --Amanda Dudley, Mitchell, Powers and Morrow qualified with a 12:02.03.

The last home meet before ECAC Indoor Championships will begin at 11 a.m. on Feb. 23 at the Indoor Sports Complex.
