7 fencers to battle for positions on Junior World Championship Team

Collegian Sports Writer

Although the regular season is over and NCAA Regionals are not for another two weeks, some members of the men's and women's fencing team won't have the weekend off.

Seven fencers are heading for Little Rock, Ark. to compete for positions on the Junior World Championship Team.

Olga Chernyak, Jennifer Prifrel, Thomas Strzalkowski, Ben Millett, Richard Clark, Anthony DuBose and Chris Jones will be competing in the event for fencers under 20, which begins today and ends Monday. These fencers will be competing against junior fencers from around the country.

"They're the best guys around," Clark said. "I'm getting psyched for it."

"All of our fencers who are going do have a chance to make the Junior World Team," Kaidanov said.

Chernyak, Prifrel and Strzalkowski each are trying to secure their positions on the team. Millett, Clark, DuBose and Jones will be trying to make the team.

"It has really been a goal for me for a long time," Millett said. "This year it has really come together."

The ability to compete this weekend is based on points earned from six previous circut event competitions. The points come from the top three results for each individual.

Millett and Clark will be competing for the third position on the epee team. However each is at least 35 points behind NCAA Champion Juba Beshin, their biggest opponent. To make the team, one of these two would have to finish at least four spots ahead of Behsin and defeat his teammate.

"We're going to have to fight it out," Millett said. "It's a real wide open race for the third spot."

Should any of the fencers be successful in their endeavors this weekend they will be able to represent the United States at the World Championship in Ankara, Turkey, from Aug. 28-Sept. 2.

"It is something that will enhance their competitive skills," Kaidanov said. He added that being a member of the team is a high honor.

In addition, this weekend will let the fencers preview some of the opponents they will be meeting in NCAA Regionals, March 2-3, and at the NCAA Championships, March 20-24. These opponents come from Duke, Navy, the University of North Carolina, and The University of Pennsylvania.
