It could be said after last night's performance against the No. 2 women's basketball team, that the Rhode Island WRams beat themselves.
After all, the WRams had more turnovers, 36, than points, 33. But this was to be expected from Rhode Island, an Atlantic 10 perennial cellar dweller, which holds a 5-17 record this year, and 1-12 in the A-10. It isn't enough that the Lady Lions have to play the pitiful WRams, but at 2 tommorow in Rec Hall Penn State battles winless Massachusetts.
But this game will hold special significance because it will the final regular-season home game for three Lady Lion seniors: guards Tanya Garner and Shelly Caplinger and forward Terri Williams.
And it will be against UMass that the Lady Lions should try to use more of the same combinations they used against Rhode Island.
-- Coach Rene Portland used the combination of 6'3" Kathy Phillips and 6'5" Tina Henry throughout the game to dominate the undersized WRams. Phillips scored 19 points while Henry netted a career-high of 21 points.
"I didn't believe anybody when they told me. I'm surprised, I guess," Henry said in her typical understating manner.
Many times during the game, guards Dana Eikenberg or Jen Kretchmar would find Phillips all alone down court, breaking to the basket, for the easy deuce.
"I was very pleased with Kathy and Tina," Portland said. "I have always liked a quick center (Phillips) and Tina had improved on that."
Portland said she tried the combination when the team went to California in December along with freshman Helen Holloway to form a massive backcourt. Portland added she also thought about using it against Rutgers earlier in the year.
-- Forward Susan Robinson got her usual double figure point output in this game (10), making it the 83rd straight time she has accomplished this feat. But Robinson waited until the 8:32 mark of the second half to accomplish it, hitting two free throws.
-- All of the Lady Lions scored in this game, with freshman Jackie Donovan the last player to get in the black, hitting two free throws with 36 seconds left in the game.
Twelve of the 14 Lady Lions hit 3-pointers, with Kim Lazor hitting her first of the year.
-- Freshman Missy Masley continues to be sidelined with a shoulder injury along with Holloway. She has a foot injury and Portland said Holloway is having a bone scan done today to determine the true severity of the injury.
-- One addition to the all-name team, WRams senior guard Missy Udicious attempted just one shot and was held scoreless in 12 minutes of action.
