Although Valentine's Day has passed, it is still possible to join in the spirit of the holiday by attending the Penn State Chamber Singers' "Celebration of Love" concert at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Old Main rotunda.

The program for this fifth annual concert will focus on English composers, such as Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Other composers represented include Claudio Monteverdi, John Dowland and Andrea Gabrieli.

Douglas Miller, director of the Chamber Singers, said the rotunda provides a great place for vocal music because it is "very resonant." The rotunda will be decorated, and the performers will sing from the stairs and balcony.

Between songs, theater professors Helen and Lowell Manfull and two acting students read poetry and love texts from the Renaissance to the 20th century. The students will also act out some scenes from plays such as Romeo and Juliet and Our Town.

"I was anxious to find a focal presentation that was maybe somewhat different than a traditional concert presentation," Miller said.

The Penn State Chamber Singers is a 23-member group composed of the Penn State Concert Choir's strongest singers. The "Celebration of Love" concert, which traditionally takes place near Valentine's Day, is one of the few times during the year when the Chamber Singers gets to do its own performance.

Thomas Serene (junior-economics), treasurer of the Chamber Singers, said the group looks forward to this concert because it takes place away from the Concert Choir and in an intimate setting like the Old Main rotunda.

"It's a really special thing . . . being that the topic is love," Serene said.

The event was created in 1987 as a tribute to the late professor Willa Taylor, who was the choral director durring the 1940s and 1950s. Members of the audience are invited to contribute to the Willa Taylor Vocal Endowment.

Tickets for the performance are $7.50 each and may be purchased or reserved up until 5 p.m. today by calling 863-2142.
