Sobering trend

Panhel's decision will limit alcohol abuse

Sorority leaders have made a sobering decision.

Last week the Panhellenic Council passed a resolution phasing out alcohol at some Greek social events. Hopefully, this resolution will start a gradual trend toward a healthier attitude about alcohol on campus. Combatting alcohol abuse and related problems is important and the council should be commended for their actions.

Through their decision the council has shown that they care about both the minds and bodies of their members. Beginning Fall Semester alcohol will be prohibited at one-third of sorority socials with fraternities. To help sororities and fraternities make the transition to non-alcoholic events, Panhel will require that sororities hold two non-alcoholic socials this semester.

Reducing the amount of alcohol at socials will help shed the Animal House image fraternities are often given unfairly.

With Greeks taking the lead in renouncing alcohol at some social events, perhaps other members of the student body will follow, resulting in a healthier University-wide attitude toward alcohol.
