NEWS
 
Volunteering means different things to people.
 
As the world focuses its attention on events in the Persian Gulf, a journalist for one of Poland's largest independent newspapers warned that the happenings in Eastern Europe should not be overlooked.
 
The Association of Residence Hall Students adopted a recommendation Monday night to deny the Centre Daily Times carriers access to dorms before 7 a.m., and a University official indicated the paper would probably seek other ways to deliver to students earlier.
 
Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor visited the University yesterday to decide whether students are satisfied with financial aid arrangements.
 
At its general assembly meeting Monday night, Black Caucus announced it will hold a town meeting to decide how to raise funds for a new Paul Robeson Cultural Center.
 
Two African-American women leaders at the University agree that whatever their titles may be, to be viewed as role models they must fulfill their responsibilities.
 
Proposed revisions to the borough's noise ordinance apparently died Monday in a State College Borough Council worksession.
 
About one college student in 500 is infected with the HIV virus -- the virus that leads to AIDS -- according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
 
After approving a $100 increase in presidential campaign spending and a ban on the use of campaign transparencies last Sunday, the Undergraduate Student Government Senate reversed its decision last night and went back to the current election rules.
 
 
SPORTS
 
The men's basketball team's starting guards are good. Point guard Freddie Barnes is a tremendous penetrator with 3-point range and shooting guard Monroe Brown is the Lions' defensive specialist.
 
Guard Monroe Brown and the men's basketball team would like to forget the Lions' Dec. 18 Atlantic 10 opener in Philadelpia against Temple.
 
It is possible to have too much of a good thing.
 
Setter Scott Miller was sick and tired of seeing selfishness eat away at the men's volleyball team.
 
The No. 4 men's volleyball team will take on an old nemesis tonight.
 
A distance runner -- a dedicated athlete who combines strength, speed, skill and intense training to become successful in events such as the mile. This athlete also works out twice a day and sometimes sacrifices spare time to practice.
