Swimmen easily roll by Shippensburg

Collegian Sports Writer

It was easy pickings for the No. 23 men's swimming and diving team Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg.

In a meet designed more as a rest for the swimmers than as a serious challenge, Penn State easily rolled past the Red Raiders, 143-102. The win raises the Lions' record to 8-1 on the season, while the loss drops Shippensburg to 17-3.

After the team's sixth meet in as many weeks, Coach Peter Brown was content with the performance of his swimmers against a weaker, Division II Red Raider squad.

"We did well and made the best of the situation," Brown said. "(The Shippensburg meet) is not really the kind of meet you can get up for because of what we've been through -- you can only tap the well so much."

Penn State "tapped the well" again and came up with the kind of performance across the board that has marked its entire season. While the meet had little significance for the swimmers heading to Eastern Championships in three weeks, it was a chance for the 14 who shaved and aren't going to try and hit lifetime-bests as the season draws to a close.

Jeff Summers, one of those not heading to Easterns, shaved prior to the meet and hit a lifetime-best in the 200-meter freestyle, while Doug Cooper, swimming in the 100 butterfly and 800 freestyle, hit lifetime-bests in both. Dave Poorbaugh also swam strong enough to hit lifetime-bests in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Although the Lions were closely contested on the front line and were touched out in several events, they captured several first-place finishes swimming their second and third events.

Co-captain Phil Meyer easily finished first in the 400 individual medley, while freshmen Kirk Skoglund and Matt Myers captured first in the 100 butterfly and 1650 freestyle, respectively. The 800 freestyle relay team of Skoglund, Meyer, Doug Cooper and Nick Boyce also finished first, with a time fast enough for a Shippensburg pool record.

Meyer, whose time in the 400 individual medley landed a pool record, said the team was satisfied with its performance.

"It's kind of hard to get psyched up for a meet like this because of all the tough meets we've had," Meyer said. "Sometimes you look past meets at the end of the season, but we have to focus and swim strong for the guys who aren't going (to Easterns)."

The diving team, which was unopposed by the Red Raiders, put up one of its best showings of the year and continued the upward progression it began two weeks ago against LaSalle.

Senior Steve Zamborsky scored high enough to make the cut for the NCAA pre-qualifying meet on the 3-meter board and Jeff Eagles scored a pair of 9's on his back dive off the 3-meter.

With the addition of Zamborsky, Penn State's top three divers, Chris Devine, Eagles and Zamborsky, will all participate in the pre-qualifying meet on both boards. The event will be held March 15-16 at Harvard University.
