Trackwomen make ECAC mark in Neb.

Collegian Sports Writer

A pair of Lady Lion runners qualified Saturday for the ECAC indoor track championships at Nebraska with lifetime bests.

Jenny Weaver finished fourth in the 3,000-meter event at the Cornhusker Invitational with her lifetime best time of 9:53.4. Weaver's mark beat the ECAC qualifying time by just under five seconds.

Weaver was one of two Lady Lions sent to Nebraska to compete in the Cornhusker Invitationals Saturday. Wendy Nelson finished sixth in the 5,000-meter event clocking in at 16:54.3. This was the second time Nelson, already an ECAC qualifier, broke 17 minutes in the 3,000-meter run.

Penn State also sent 25 athletes to the Hardee's Invitationals at the University of West Virginia on Saturday. Leslee Martin won the 5,000-meter event there, with a lifetime best of 17:24.7, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships.

Also at West Virginia, the distance medley relay team placed second with a total time of 12:20.91. Shelley Mitchell ran the 800-meter leg in 2:20.8. Jacky Brown finished the 400-meter leg in 59.4 seconds. Amanda Dudley, running the 1,200-meter leg, finished in 3:49.0. Dana Dougan ran the mile leg in 5:11.6.

Assistant coach Robyne Johnson placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.33 seconds. Assistant coach Teressa DiPrenna finished third in the 800-meter run with a 2:12 time. The two were participating in hopes of qualifying for the U.S. teams.

"Most athletes will qualify for U.S. teams after they graduate from college and are coaching," Coach Teri Jordan said. Jordan herself set a U.S. record for the 5,000-meter event when she was coaching in 1977.

Brown ran the 200-meter event in 25.55 seconds for third place. Mitchell finished sixth in the 400-meter run with a 58.99.25. Dudley came in sixth in the 800-meter run with a 2:16.3.

Laurie Morrow and Dana Dougan both had season bests in the mile run. Morrow finished fourth with a 4:59.3 and Dougan placed fifth with a 5:01.4.

Leslie Hummer placed second in the triple jump with her 37'5" mark. Mitchell and Sandra Bosnar both jumped 5'4½" in the high jump. Mitchell, having fewer misses, placed second and Bosnar finished fourth.

Kim Kessell, coming off an illness, threw 44'5½" for fourth place in the shot put. Jen Crouch placed seventh in the same event throwing 42'1".
