Consistent play from top to bottom helped lead the men's tennis team to two lopsided dual-meet victories this weekend in Erie.
The Lions beat Mercyhurst 7-2 on Friday and came back to blank Eastern Michigan Saturday to move their record to 2-0.
"I was very pleased with our performance," first-year coach Jan Bortner said. "Both matches were against solid teams. I think we played about as well as I could ask this early in the season."
The Lions had to adjust to the fast courts as well as their opponents.
"The courts their were real quick," Bortner said. "Our indoor courts at the tennis center are not as fast. We had to make a quick adjustment and I think we did that."
Penn State won four of the six singles matches and swept the doubles against Mercyhurst.
No. 1 Mark Price defeated Cohen Buys in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In No. 2 singles, Mercyhurst's Phillip Clark beat the Lions' Dave Schoenly, 7-6, 6-3. But Penn State bounced back in No. 3 singles where Scott Pickering cruised past Greg Dixon, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 4 singles, the Lions' Brad Fielding downed Espin Enge, 6-3, 7-6. And at No. 5 State's Sean Snee crushed Jamie Pilkington, 6-1, 6-1. Mercyhurst's Patrick O'Keefe knocked off No. 6 seed Corey Goldstein in three, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Schoenly and Price beat Buys and Clark. At No. 2 Pickering and Fielding beat Enge and Pilkington. And Penn State's Snee and Greg Gaunt completed the sweep with a victory over Dixon and O'Keefe at No. 3.
Against Eastern Michigan No. 2 Schoenly, No. 4 Fielding, No. 5 Snee and No. 6 Goldstein all won in straight sets. No. 1 Fielding was stretched to three sets by EMUs Mike Siminski before prevailing, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. In No. 3 singles, the Lions' Pickering lost the first set. But came back to beat Eastern Michigan's Mike Ridener, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. The same three Lions doubles teams that beat Mercyhurst Friday won against Eastern Michigan.
"I thought it was a good performance from top to bottom," Bortner said. "Brad Fielding at No. 1 had a real good weekend and Scott Pickering at No. 3 played exceptionally strong."
