Trackmen to compete in Toronto

Collegian Sports Writer

The men's track team picks up its spikes and hits the road again this weekend. But this time, the Lions are high jumping their act to a foreign country.

And even though a passport won't be needed, Coach Harry Groves and his team will still have to pass through customs as they cross the international border to our north to show off their talents in a four-team scoring meet in Toronto, Canada.

Tomorrow, the University of Toronto will host this rare quad dual meet, with McGill University, Queens University and the Lions.

And this 15-event meet will not only illustrate how the two countries approach their track programs, it will also introduce a new scoring concept.

"This looks like it's going to be a preety good meet," Groves said. "The Canadians do not place a lot of emphasis on depth so they train the premier athletes in each event. Each team will have only one man per event, and that could favor the Canadian programs."

In simpler terms, Penn State will run into the other teams' best athlete in each of the 15 events.

The individual track events feature Mike Adams who will run the 60-yard dash, Jerry Robinson in the 60-meter hurdles, Jon Strange in the 600-meter run, Joe Stegbauer in the 1,000, Aidan O'Reilly in the 1,500, and Doug Walter in the 3,000.

O'Reilly, who last week ran one of the best races of his life in the Millrose games in New York, is looking forward to competing off the shores of Lake Ontario.

"I had a pretty rough season up to last week. I was pleased to run a good race," O'Reilly said. This weekend, O'Reilly, a borderline qualifier for the NCAAs, will run the 1,500 instead of the mile.

"I'll run the 1,500 to pick up speed," he said.

The field events will showcase Phil Caraher in the shot put, Antonio Davis in the long jump, Craig Waltz in the high jump, Ricardo Hall in the triple jump and Mason Ternay in the pole vault.

In Toronto, the 4x200 relay has been added in place of the 4x800 and Kevin Kelly, Derik Ferrell, Lance Garlington and Adams will run the extremely fast race. Strange, Robinson, Kevin Cripanuk and Brian Kelley will pass the baton in the 4x400.

Penn State hasn't competed in a scoring meet since it defeated Cornell three weeks ago.

"Americans are team-oriented people," Groves said. "They enjoy sport when they try to win for the team."
