Trackwomen take on West Virginia

Collegian Sports Writer

While Wendy Nelson, Jenny Weaver and Coach Teri Jordan fly off to Nebraska to compete in the Cornhusker Invitational, the remainder of the women's track team will go up against the Moutaineers at West Virginia tomorrow.

The Lady Lions have not faced West Virginia directly in a meet yet this season, assistant coach Jeri Daniels-Elder said. Penn State has seen some individual West Virginia athletes in the Mobil and USAir Invitationals.

Twenty-five Lady Lions will bus to West Virginia today. The team's goals for this meet are to get a few more qualifiers for indoor postseason championships and to improve times and distances for those who have already qualified for the ECAC and NCAA Championships, Daniels-Elder said.

The distance medley relay team, which has already qualified for ECACs, will be looking to improve its time of 12:09. A time of under 12:00 will place the squad in the faster of the two heats to be run at ECACs, scheduled for March 3. The distance medley relay consists of one 400-, 800-, 1,200-, and 1,600-meter lap.

Shelley Mitchell and Sandra Bosner will be high jumping. High jumper Leslie Lippincott has the weekend off. Alicia Porro will perform in the triple jump.

Jacky Brown will run in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter run. Some of West Virginia's runners have slightly better times than Brown, Daniels-Elder said. Brown said she felt that she should be challenged at West Virginia.

The team has been fighting flu and injuries the past few weeks, Daniels-Elder said.

"All my throwers are back to health," she said.

Kim Kessell and Jen Crouch were out last week with injuries and illness. Kessell had a good practice yesterday, Daniels-Elder said, so they are expecting a good performance from her.

"Everyone just has to shake the bug going around. I'm fine now and I get to throw this week," Kessell said.

Meanwhile at the Cornhusker Invitational, Nelson will try to improve her time in the 5,000-meter event and Weaver is aiming for a faster time in the 3,000-meter run.

The Lady Lions' next home meet will be Feb. 23 at the Indoor Sports Complex. It will be an open meet; any college which applies for competition will be allowed to compete. Participants in the event have not yet been determined.
