ISC adviser wants a share of cultures

Collegian Staff Writer

One of the main goals of new International Student Council adviser Stan Latta is to educate international students about American society and American students about different cultures.

Latta, who is also acting Campus Life director, was officially introduced during ISC's general assembly meeting last Jan. 13, but accepted the job just before last semester break.

"Part of my role as adviser is to challenge the student group by bringing different thoughts to the forefront," he said.

Latta encourages ISC officers to create opportunities for open discussions or dialogue between organizations with different opinions on issues such as the gulf war.

Latta said a "natural tie" exists between his job in Campus Life and his duties as an adviser.

As Campus Life director, he helps University students who are victims of intolerance, be it a verbal insult or an offensive poster. He also seeks to "shape and mold a positive environment" for all students and improve interpersonal relationships between students and student groups.

Although he does not participate in overall decision making, he can express his opinions on council decisions and alternatives that the council may not have considered.

"He knows some issues concerning international students and seemed interested and effective in such matters," ISC President Frederik Wenzel said.

Latta stressed the importance of the link between the ISC and the Office of International Students because each represents international students' interests.

The director of OIS, James Lynch served as ISC adviser before resigning last semester. But Latta said continuing contact is one of his goals.

"I intend to work closely with the OIS," Latta said.
