Missing panelist
Who was the missing guest panelist, Glenn Mones, at the Middle East Studies Committee presentation of "Perspectives on the War"(Feb. 6?) Glenn Mones is a co-founder of the Zionist Youth Activist Movement, Tahgar (which in Hebrew means "spirit of the challenge.") Mr. Mones was originally invited to University Park by Yachad, Penn State Friends of Israel, to attend this event. It became apparent that, due to the backgrounds of the panelists, the discussion would inevitably drift to a "linkage" between the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq and the Palestinian-Israeli issue. We communicated to the organizing committee our apprehensions about the direction that this discussion would take. We made it clear that if the discussion was not limited to the topic advertised, Mr. Mones would be unwilling to participate in an unfairly balanced panel. However, due to the convictions of the other four panelists, it was impossible to provide Mr. Mones with the assurance that this connection would not be posed. As a result, it was explained that Mr. Mones would not be attending the forum. Despite this understanding, the organizing committee irresponsibly included Mr. Mones' name in the list of speakers, and ommitted Yachad's name from the list of co-sponsors. We believe that the Middle East Studies Committtee owes an apology to the campus for misleading them concerning the nature and format of the panel. We would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to hear Glenn Mones speak at Penn State at a later date.
