Letter to the Editor
Fair military
I become extremely angry when I read articles such as "Minorities question role in Gulf War" (Feb. 4.) Being a three year veteran of the U.S. Army, I can say that the majority of the blacks serving their country are proud to do so. They love their country very much and have a patriotic sense of duty. I had many black friends while I was in the Army, one of whom was very close to me. He was my best friend and was like a brother to me. I lost that friend to a tragedy and it still hurts me today, but to read that article hurts me even more. The article says that many blacks join the military to get money for college and better their position in life. Well I'm white and I did the same damn thing. It's not just blacks who do this. Getting money for college is not the only reason we choose to serve in the military either. We do it for a variety of reasons, some of which may be personal. For those of you who question the role of blacks in the military, I challenge you to talk about your position to a number of black enlisted persons, professional non-commissioned officers and officers serving on active duty. I guarantee that the majority will either disagree or be disgusted with your opinion. Because I'm white, some of you might say that "It's a black thing, you wouldn't understand." Well, from me and all my black and white friends who have served, or are still currently serving, I have one for you. "It's a sense of duty and love for our country and you wouldn't understand." Do not try to undermine the efforts of a proud group of people with your racial rhetoric.
