The women's track team was spread across the Eastern seaboard this weekend. Penn State athletes performed in three separate competitions in New York, Florida, and Virginia.
The main part of the team competed at Ithaca, N.Y. where Jacky Brown claimed two more spots in the ECAC Championships during the Cornell Invitational Saturday.
Brown ran the 55-meter dash in 7:15, earning first place and beating the ECAC qualifying time of 7.34 seconds. Brown also led off Leslie Hummer, Alicia Porro and Amy Kopf in the 4x400-meter (one mile) relay for their ECAC qualifying time of 3:58.
Wendy Nelson placed first in the one-mile run with a 4:59.1. Amanda Dudley finished second with a 5:01.6. Deanne Martz won the 1,000-meter run in 2:58 with Kopf in second with a 3:02.2. Leslee Martin took the 5,000-meter event in 17:37.8. Carol Davis placed second with 18:06.8.
Teressa DiPerna won the 800-meter sprint in 2:11.3. Hummer won the 400 meters in 58.5 seconds. Brown placed second in the 200-meter event with a 25.33.
Michelle Thompson took first in the hammer throw with a distance of 45'9". Stacy Frank placed second throwing 43'3½". Frank also finished third in the shotput throwing 35'11".
Leslie Lippincott jumped 5'8" for first place in the high jump. Sandra Bosnar placed second, jumping 5'2". In the long jump, Dana Toscano placed third with distance of 16'11". Porro won the triple jump with a 38'2". Hummer ranked second with a 36'6" jump.
In Tallahassee, Fla., Lady Lion Jenny Weaver finished 10th in the IAAF U.S. Cross Country Junior Team trials this weekend. The top six finishers made the World Cross Country team and the remaining four, including Weaver, qualified as alternates for the team. Weaver, the only Penn State athlete invited to compete, finished the four-kilometer race in 15:31.
A squad of Lady Lions traveled to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the Mobil Invitationals at George Mason University yesterday. The team finished sixth in the event with a total of 9:07.8. They missed their goal of 8:59, the qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Shelley Mitchell led off the team with a 2:18.5. Dawn Eidson clocked at 2:18.2 and handed off to Dana Dougan who finished her lap with a 2:15.1. Laurie Morrow finished the event with a 2:16.0. Villanova placed first at 8:54.0 and N. Carolina placed second at 8:54.9.
