Collegian Sports Writer

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of ice hockey at Penn State, the ice hockey club started a new tradition. Between the second and third period of Saturday's game club president Norm Hutchison inducted the first class into the Penn State Hockey Hall of Fame.

Seven individuals were recgonized from two different catagories: off the ice -- administration and coaching (five people), and on the ice -- players.

First to be recgonized was Vance McCullough. McCullough has been the director of club sports at the University since 1978. He was the first person to be awarded the PSU Hockey Award for Excellence in 1987. He has been a source of continuity for the program, working with five different coaches and 13 club presidents.

"(This Hall of Fame) makes me feel good, not only for myself but for the Penn State hockey program," McCullough said.

Second was the founder and first president of the Penn State Ice Hockey Club, Roy Scott. He was a player in 1971-1974 and co-captain during the 1972-73 season. Scott is also known for organizing a letter-writing campaign to raise support for the team. He graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and currently works as a sales manager for an industrial mixing company.

All the way from Portland, Ore., came Bill Proudman. His credentials include being club president from 1974-77, club PR director from 1977-78 and author of History of Penn State Hockey from 1971-78. Proudman was vice-president and founding member of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Conference in 1976-77.

Bob Hettema was the head coach in 1976-77 and compiled a 14-6-2 record. He helped organize a teams in the youth hockey league and started the high school team. Hettema coached a Penn State club in front of 6,000 people (the largest crowd to ever see the Icers play) at the Philadelphia Spectrum while facing Villanova.

John Shellington was the Icers' coach from 1981-1987, the longest tenure of any Icer coach, recording a record of 107-62-7. He was a University Financial Officer while volunteering as coach. He said his most memorable games were coming from behind to win the 1985 Nittany Lion Invitational and winning the 1984 NIT Championship.

The first person inducted in the players catagory was John Dufford. He played from 1939-42, a member of the first Penn State hockey team, which held varsity status. Dufford left school in 1942 to join the Marines in World War II. He returned to Penn State in 1955 and graduated with an engineering degree.

The final player to be inducted was the Icers' all-time leading scorer with 129 goals, 192 assists for 321 points in 135 games. Lynn Sipe played from 1983-87.

"The alumni was a big factor . . . we consider ourselves to be a family . . . we wanted to show them that it was worth their time and that we are a good hockey team," defenseman Geoff Martha said.
