Wal-Mart is coming to town.
The retail chain will open its second Pennsylvania store tomorrow in State College.
Typically a midwestern store, Wal-Mart has begun a nationwide expansion into new territories. The company hopes to open 165 new stores this year, said Brent Hardin, Wal-Mart's State College manager.
Construction of the new store at 1665 N. Atherton St. ended in October. Usually a new store needs five to six weeks to complete setting up and hiring, Hardin said, but due to the semester break and holiday season, the store needed eight weeks.
Customers can expect some giveaways and a few other surprises at tomorrow's grand opening, Hardin said.
Centre Area Transportation Authority will service the new Wal-Mart location.
Wal-Mart is headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., where Sam Walton opened the first store in 1962. Walton wanted to bring a large discount store to the small town, and in 1970 the company went public.
According to a Businessweek magazine report, Wal-Mart is worth over $30 billion and is the third-largest U.S. retailer. The chain owns more than 1,400 stores nationwide.
