Both fencing teams now 8-0 after impressive wins

Collegian Sports Writer

It took 11 hours, but the men's and women's fencing teams managed to maintain their winning streaks and raise their overall records to 8-0 each.

From 9 Saturday morning to 8 that night, the teams faced a total of nine opponents: Cornell, Duke, Fairleigh Dickinson, Navy, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Stanford and Wisconsin.

"We had a strong, solid performance from our women's team," Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov said.

The Lady Lions competed against some very strong teams during the day, the strongest of which was FDU, Kaidanov said. The women defeated FDU, 10-6, a very impressive win, he said.

The women also expected to meet stiff competition in UNC and Wisconsin.

"We practically shut up Wisconsin and UNC," Kaidanov said. "We didn't give them any chances to break. It was an excellent team victory."

"It just seemed that we were really unbeatable," Katie Kowalski said. Kowalski attributed this feeling to the team's strong desire to win and keep its undefeated record.

Even the alternates, Cindy Bent, Jennifer Prifrel and Carol Smith, had strong performances.

The alternates showed confidence on the strip and were not intimidated by even the strongest opponents, Kowalski said.

The men's sabre team also had a superior performance.

"It was definitely the strongest on the field and no team could get close," Kaidanov said.

The team shut out Wisconsin, N.C. State, Cornell and Navy, 9-0.

The men's foil team also performed very well, despite the fact that one of its stronger fencers, Ed Mufel, was still suffering the effects of bronchitis.

"His performance overall was satisfactory," Kaidanov said.

Despite not having Mufel at his peak, the team seemed to be solid and quite confident in its abilities. Anthony DuBose and Steve Flores performed well, making the team very solid, Kaidanov said.

"We fenced well. We really didn't have any difficulty with any schools except Duke," fencer Anthony DuBose said.

However, the team did defeat Duke's strong fencers, 5-4, and it shut out Wisconsin, Stanford and Northwestern, 9-0.

The men's epee team was the only squad to meet with difficulties in its performance.

"We knew we were going to have some trouble," fencer Ben Millet said.

"It (the epee squad) appears to be very young and inexperienced, but shows potential," Kaidanov said.

Three of the strongest fencers, Millet, Chris Jones and Steve Perlstein, are freshmen. However, this shows where the team stands and what they need to work on in the future, Kaidanov said.
