Daniels to enter NFL draft

Collegian Sports Writer

Dave Daniels may still have more acrobatic receptions up his sleeve, but they will no longer be made in a Penn State uniform.

Daniels, a wide receiver for the Lions, renounced his final year of collegiate eligibility and will enter the 1991 NFL draft, Coach Joe Paterno announced Friday.

"I didn't go because of money. If money was the issue, I would have waited another year," Daniels said. "I went because I felt it's time for me to move on in my life -- it's the best decision for me now. I have no regrets."

The senior from Sarasota, Fla., ranks fourth on Penn State's all-time reception list, grabbing 69 catches in his three seasons. Daniels was redshirted during his freshman season of 1987.

He led this year's squad with 31 receptions and 538 receiving yards. Over his career, Daniels' receptions accounted for 1,222 yards and nine touchdowns.

Daniels is well-remembered for his dazzling post-season performances in the 1989 Holiday Bowl and the 1990 Blockbuster Bowl.

In the first, he hauled down an amazing 52-yard strike from quarterback Tony Sacca, twisting and turning and concentrating on an over-the-shoulder grab -- a feat now immortalized in highlight films.

In the Blockbuster Bowl against Florida State, Daniels caught seven passes for 154 yards, including a 56-yard score. His seven-reception performance eclipsed the Penn State record of six in a bowl contest, set in the 1969 and 1986 Orange Bowls.

Daniels, an administration of justice major, is expected to graduate this year.

"We're going to miss Dave," quarterback Tony Sacca said. "He felt that he should move on and that's his decision -- there's nothing we can do about that."

Daniels enters a draft once void of high-quality receivers but now cluttered with marquis performers. Rob Carpenter of Syracuse and Herman Moore of Virginia announced their draft intentions last week, along with Notre Dame standout Raghib Ismail, a projected top three selection.

Paterno also announced that offensive lineman Sean Love, who played sparingly through injury last season, has withdrawn from school and indicated he will enter the NFL draft in April.

Penn State announced that kicker Henry Adkins, cornerback Greg Fusetti, long snapper Mark Lawn and offensive guard Sean Moffitt have indicated they will not return in 1991 to complete their eligibility. Tackle Tony Prawdzik is not enrolled this semester and has not indicated that he will return in the fall.
