Undefeated swimmen host LaSalle

Collegian Sports Writer

Under Coach Peter Brown, the men's swimming and diving team has never lost a dual meet to LaSalle.

This season, under Brown, Penn State has not lost a dual meet -- period.

At 3:15 tommorrow afternoon, the undefeated Lions (6-0) will be looking to keep both streaks alive when they swim against the Explorers in McCoy Natatorium.

LaSalle (7-1) will be searching for a way to defeat a Penn State team which has mystified them in recent years, including a 72-41 loss to the Lions last year in the natatorium. The Lions, fresh off a dual meet victory last week at Virginia, will be swimming a different lineup than in past weeks.

"This week, I want to be able to get a good look at the swimmer's other events for our next couple of meets and for Easterns," Brown said. "The switch also helps the swimmers to get motivated and not get lulled."

Prior to the meet, Penn State will honor their seven graduating seniors as they prepare for their final home meet of the season.

LaSalle coach John Lyons, who served as an assistant coach for Penn State before going to LaSalle, believes that motivation will not be a problem for his team.

"This is the kind of meet we look forward to because Penn State is one of the better teams in the East," Lyons said.

Senior co-captain Walt Sopp, who has had unbridled success in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle throughout the season, tomorrow will swim in the 200 freestyle and in both the 200 freestyle and medley relay events.

"We're trying to step up competition and prepare ourselves for Ohio State," Sopp said. "Swimming the off events really provides a diversity in competition and allows you to push yourself a little harder."

LaSalle, which lacks depth across the board, has strong front-line swimmers and will counter the Lions with strong all-arounder Eric Buhain (200 breaststroke), and State College product Matt Hettche (1650 freestyle).

The diving team, which easily outscored the Explorers earlier this season at the Penn State Diving Invitational, will change its lineup as well, as all four divers will be attempting new dives on both boards.

"This a time for us to try out some things for Ohio State," diving coach Craig Brown said. "I'd like us to have some momentum going into Ohio next week."

Despite the Lions' depth, Peter Brown remains wary.

"(LaSalle) is not the caliber of Virginia, but they're good enough on their front line that you can't putz around with them or they'll get you," he said.
