Thomas to address Commonwealth campus issues

University President Joab Thomas will speak in Findlay Dining Commons at 9:30 tomorrow morning during the first full meeting of the Commonwealth Council of Student Governments this semester.

"We want to get some direction from Dr. Thomas on where he feels the Commonwealth Education System will be in the upcoming years," CCSG Coordinator Brian Donaldson said. "We also want to know his ideas on improving campus atmosphere and the system as a whole."

The council will also ask Thomas how continuing University cost restrictions will affect the Commonwealth campuses, Donaldson said.

Other speakers include Scott Kretchmar and Charles Gunderman from the Task Force On Undergraduate Education, he said.

Gunderman will talk about how campus enhancement funds are being used at the Commonwealth campuses, Donaldson said. The income from these funds is traditionally used to pay for parking needs and to better student programs and services.

"He'll be asking students where they think the money is being spent and where it should be spent," Donaldson said.

Donaldson said he hopes Kretchmar can give the council some new angles that the task force will use to improve undergraduate education "since 65 percent of all freshman start at a Commonwealth campus."

Candidates for CCSG elections will also be sought during the meeting, Donaldson said.
