Housing office tells students: Just live it!

Collegian Staff Writer

Some University dining hall and dorm workers are sporting new attire -- bright fluorescent green buttons proclaiming, "JUST LIVE IT!"

The buttons are part of a revised year-long campaign sponsored by the Office of Housing and Food Service Operations and Residence Life to promote on-campus living, said Chris Hurley, assistant manager of the Assignment Office for Campus Residences. Organizers chose the theme -- a takeoff of Nike commercials -- because they thought students would identify with it.

Organizers also decided to give buttons to all Housing and Food Services employees who come in contact with University students. Last year the assignment office sent a letter to management to help promote the campaign, Hurley said.

"They all take pride in the halls -- it's kind of neat to get them all involved," Hurley said.

Along with the buttons, about 10,000 brochures with information about the dorms were printed.

The brochure, printed in the same bright colors as the buttons, promotes on-campus living as being safe and affordable. It also reviews special living options and some campus activities, he said.

In addition to various workers, resident assistants and students are featured in brochure photographs, each highlighting a different aspect of on-campus living, said Jim Fay, associate director of Residence Life.

Although the campaign officially starts today, the brochures have been used before for trips to Commonwealth campuses, Fay said.

Hurley said the campaign is not a competition with local realtors.

"We're not trying to compete with our counterparts off-campus, but we're simply letting people know the benefits about living on-campus," he said. "We want to make sure they understand what we have to offer."
