Amid screams of "We are Penn State" the women's gymnastics team defeated rival Ohio State 186-181.1 Saturday night in its first home meet.
While the Lady Lions improved their record to 4-0, their score Saturday night was 0.75 points below their opening meet total. "The girls were over-confident; too loose and giddy," Coach Judi Avener said.
Ohio State coach Larry Cox said, "We were confident coming into this that Penn State was much better than us."
Penn State's Allison Barber placed first in the all-around with a 37.7 while Lynn Crane placed second with a 37.6. Claire Wilson of Ohio State (1-3) finished third with a 37.35.
Barber and Crane had only competed together one other time in the all-around. "They're two decent all-arounders, Avener said.
Barber, who holds Penn State's record for all-around competition at 38.55, improved over her opening-meet score (36.2) by 1.5 points.
"Being at home gave me an advantage and a motivation to do well for my teammates and the audience," Barber said.
Crane won the Ann Carr award, an award that is given to the gymnast who provides the most inspirational performance at each home meet.
Penn State swept on the vault. Barber and Crane tied for first with a 9.7. Coby Silver placed third with a 9.4.
Crane performed a new vault, a front-front, a front handspring onto the vault, followed by one-and-one-half front flips. The gymnast finishes facing out.
On the uneven bars, Crane placed first with a 9.45. Ohio State's Wilson took second with a 9.35 while Stacie Halstead finished third with a 9.25.
"We are a better bar team than that," Avener said.
Penn State's Janice Rogers, who performed in exhibition, and Kira Rohm attempted a new release move, the Tkachev. To do the Tkachev, a gymnast does a giant swing on the high bar, releases the bar and flies over it backwards, sits up and grabs the bar again.
Rogers fell off of the bar and scored an 8.6 but her score did not count toward the team total. Rohm, scored a 9.1. She successfully completed the Tkachev, but fell off the bars attempting a Ginger, a release move in which the gymnast does a fly-away, half turn and catches the bar again.
"It is difficult to do two release moves in one routine," Rohm said. "I was too aggressive."
Barber performed a release move called a Deltehev. She crossed her hands, did a half turn under the high bar, flipped over the bar, straddled it and caught it again.
Barber took first place on the balance beam with a 9.55. Penn State's Rene Lyst tied with Ohio State's Wilson for a 9.5.
"We're much, much better on the beam," Avener said. "Our timing was off ."
Avener said that the girls have to fight more when they think they are going to fall off.
On the floor exercise, Barber and Crane tied for first with a 9.55. Rogers scored a 9.5 for third.
Barber added a second double backflip to her floor routine.
On the first pass of her floor routine, Crane added a layout pike and double backflip. On her last pass, she performed a one and a quarter Arabian, a half twist and a quarter front flip.
The Lady Lions face Alabama at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Alabama.
