Chalk up another win.
For the sixth time this season, the men's swimming and diving team came face to face with a formidable opponent, and for the sixth time the Lions did what they had to do to win.
Their latest success came against nationally-ranked, ACC powerhouse Virginia Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va., where Penn State methodically defeated the Cavaliers, 135-107.
The victory raised the Lions record to a perfect 6-0 on the season while the 21st-ranked Cavaliers fell to 3-2.
Penn State continued its consistency and domination against its opponents, coming off a tough road meet last weekend against Pitt.
"I felt real good about the meet," Coach Peter Brown said, "because (Virginia) put a lot of pressure on the individual swimmers and they responded extremely well, as they have all year."
Penn State, avenging a 136-107 loss to Virginia last year, had solid performances across the board as the team continues to have its best season in years.
Senior co-captain Walt Sopp, coming off first-place finishes in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle last weekend against Pitt, had the same success this week, capturing first in both events against a Virginia team with strong freestyle depth.
"We didn't have a great meet, but we swam well enough to win," Brown said. "I wasn't suprised because I knew going in that if we swam well enough we would win."
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Boyce, Thad Davis, James Sloat and Ed Adelman swept the Cavaliers away capturing first. Penn State also won the 400 freestyle relay, led by strong sprinter Walt Sopp.
Adam Carroll, who captured first in the 200 and 500 freestyle last week against Pitt, won in the 200 freestyle. Andy Archer picked up a victory in the 200 breaststroke.
The diving team, composed of Jeff Eagles, Steve Zamborsky, Chris Devine and Joe Marsh on both the 1- and 3-meter boards had another strong meet but were unable to capture a first-place finish on either board.
Zamborsky had mixed feelings about the diving team's performance.
"I could have gotten my dives into the water better," Zamborsky said, "but overall as a team we were fairly pleased, considering the surroundings and everything we were up against."
The Lions will now prepare for their final home meet of the season next Saturday against LaSalle.
"This year's team is better in different ways than teams in the past couple of years," Brown said. "We're a lot stronger and winning without rest and I'm hopeful that it will continue."
