There's no rest for the weary. While most of the student body was suffering from post-holiday exhaustion, the women's track team hosted the Lady Lion Invitational and road-tripped to the Yale Invitational.
At 10:30 tomorrow morning the tough schedule continues when the squad hosts Georgetown and Cornell in the Lady Lion Classic.
Coach Teri Jordan expects a good overall competition between Penn State, Cornell and Georgetown in the Classic. In the past, Georgetown and Cornell's strengths lay in their distance runners, but this year they have improved on their throwers and jumpers. However, Georgetown will have no entrants in the pentathlon, shot put, high jump or hammer throw events.
"The 800 (meter run) is a strong event for us. Also, the mile relay should be an excellent event between the three colleges," Jordan said.
Redshirt runner Pam Connell will compete along with Shelly Mitchell in the 55-meter hurdles against Judith Owen of Georgetown and Susan Culler of Cornell. Former Lady Lions Carmen Mann and Robyne Johnson will jump against Jennifer McDermott of Georgetown and Susan Culler of Cornell in the triple jump. Frank and Kessell are throwing for Penn State in shot put and hammer throw against Jessica Harland and Erica Green of Cornell.
The Lady Lion Invitational will be the last home meet for women's track until Feb. 23.
More than 50 teams competed at the Yale Invitational on Jan. 13. Mitchell easily qualified for the Eastern Collegate Athletic Conference Championships in the pentathlon, passing the needed 3,200 points with a score of 3,605. Wendy Nelson won the 5,000-meter run with a lifetime indoor best of 17:13.32. Jenny Weaver was second with 17:15.53. Dana Dugan won the mile run in 5:04.99.
Although invitationals are not scored on a team basis, Jordan was confident that the trackwomen would have placed well.
"With so many first, second and third place scores . . . we would have easily won," Jordan said.
So far, five Lady Lions have qualified for the ECAC Championships, scheduled for March 2-3 at New Haven, Conn. Nelson and Weaver will compete in the 5,000- and the two-mile runs. Mitchell will run in the heptathlon and 55-meter hurdles. Kim Kessell and Stacy Frank will represent the throwers in the shot put and javelin, respectively.
