Police Log

  • Student arraigned on weapon charge: John Focareta, 24, of New Kensington, was arraigned before District Magistrate Clifford Yorks on a concealed weapon charge and released on $1,000 bail Wednesday. He was arrested near the Penn State Bookstore for carrying a concealed 9 mm pistol, University Police Services said.

    Focareta, a University student, did not have a permit or license for the gun in his possession, police said.

    A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

  • Uni-Mart site of simple assault: Nara Shiao, 320 E. Beaver Ave., reported she was assaulted Saturday morning while trying to leave Uni-Mart, 151 S. Garner St., State College Bureau of Police Services said.

    Shiao told police she was handcuffed and shot with a stun gun while trying to leave with her boyfriend around 2 a.m. Saturday. The suspects told police they did not stun Shiao. Police would not release the suspects' names.

    Shiao's boyfriend had been in an argument with the store clerk and when the couple fled, she was grabbed and hancuffed by another man, police said.

    Police said Shiao was discovered on the 200 block of Locust Lane with four men. It is unknown whether the four men are store employees.

  • Burglary: Jay Tidwell, A12 Hamilton, reported a compact disc player, Walkman, cassette player, portable organ and several compact discs, total value $1,700, were taken from his room between Dec. 14 and Saturday, University police said.

  • Burglary: Howard Offenhunter, 520 E. Calder Way, and Seth Jacobson, 522 E. College Ave., reported that several items including a television, answering machine, CD player and clock radio, total value $490, were taken from Jacobson's residence between Dec. 20 and Jan. 10, State College police said.

  • Theft: Tracey Andrews, of Spring Mills, reported his citizens band radio, pool cue and cassettes, valued at $354, were taken from his truck while it was parked at Stocker's Chevrolet, 701 Benner Pike, between Jan. 4 and Friday, State College police said.
