Dear Reader,

Welcome to the first Collegian Magazine of the 1990 football season. We are excited about the Magazine and the upcoming season as well. If you are a new reader, we hope you will enjoy the magazine. For returning readers, we promise you another season of excellent coverage and first-rate stories.

Our cover for this issue poses the question of who will emerge as the next great Penn State tailback. Leroy Thompson, Gary Brown, Gerry Collins and Richie Anderson will all try to follow in the footsteps of such greats as Warner, Dozier and the recently-departed Blair Thomas.

Although the cover design has not changed, we will put more emphasis on players in action this year. As evidenced by this first cover, the design will not always be a color photo of a player. Throughout the season we will try many different designs on the cover and some content changes.

You can, however, still expect to continue receiving excellent game-day coverage of Penn State football. Throughout the season, we will profile assistant coaches on the Penn State football team. An integral part of the team, Coach Joe Paterno's assistants rarely receive any media coverage. In the Magazine, however, you will see them up close and personal.

Speaking of Coach Paterno, this is his 25th season as the Lion's head man. In the 1990 edition of the Magazine, we will discuss, among other things, how Penn State's admission into the Big Ten has revitalized Coach Paterno's career.

During the season, you will also read about how Happy Valley's weather affects football games and downtown businesses. You will also read about what is needed to make a Penn State football tailgate party really special.

Hopefully, these profiles will be insightful and pleasurable to read as well as giving you another perspective on the Penn State football team, the Lions' die-hard fans and life in Happy Valley.

Today's issue also previews both the Nittany Lions and the Texas Longhorns. We feel that these stories will give you a little more insight into this afternoon's game as well as telling you who are the key players to watch.

Speaking of players to watch, quarterback Tom Bill continues his comeback from alcohol rehabilitation. You will read about some of the emotional changes he went through during his rehabilitation and his determination to rejoin the team. We feel this story will show you that despite his problems, Bill is still a team leader who is admired by his teammates for his perseverance.

Of course, Collegian Magazine provides you with a profile on the preseason's biggest story. This centerfold story will talk about the four Penn State tailbacks and their individual expectations for the upcoming season.

Finally, you will read a story on the differences between a freshmen and senior fans attending football games.

We look forward to bringing you outstanding coverage and excellent, well-written stories all season long. We hope you enjoy our magazine and will keep reading.

Sincerely,
Chino And Kent
