READING -- A new University president is unlikely to be named at today's Board of Trustees meeting, although the Trustee Presidential Selection Committee met yesterday.
J. Lloyd Huck, board president and committee chairman, said the committee discussed the interviews and background references of the leading candidates.
The committee, which has been interviewing candidates for the past month, held no additional interviews yesterday, Huck said, adding that no candidates were present at the meeting.
Naming a replacement for retiring University President Bryce Jordan was delayed last month when the committee requested a second list of candidates. Jordan, scheduled to retire Aug. 31, agreed to stay in his position until a new president is chosen.
Huck said he hopes a candidate will be chosen by the end of the month. A special session of the board will be called to vote on the candidate, he said.
Charles L. Hosler, acting executive vice president and provost, said the University could continue functioning for a short time without a president.
"The ship can run without a captain, but you still need the captain every now and then to steer the ship," he added.
