The softball team is currently riding a hot streak, going undefeated since returning from its Arizona road trip. The problem so far has been actually getting to play.
After a 5-4, 12-1 sweep of Lock Haven on Tuesday in a doubleheader which comprises half of the games the Lady Lions (6-8) have played since Feb. 27, Penn State meets another regional rival at 3:30 this afternoon at Lady Lion Field in a doubleheader against Bucknell.
The Lady Bison (7-2) have become a nemesis of Penn State as of late, Coach Sue Rankin said. Bucknell has split its doubleheader with Penn State in each of the past two seasons.
"We should be concentrating on ourselves," third baseman Dena Tauriello said. "We're a much better team than they are, and we've got to concentrate on playing up to our level. We've tended to play down to their level, and they've won a couple of games they shouldn't have."
"We've got to hit their pitching right away," pitcher Kim Corbin said. "Our timing wasn't right (last year)."
Corbin, who has pitched or batted in every game except Tuesday's second game, is questionable for today. She is 3-4 on the year.
"I'm still not in full swing," Corbin said. "I'm still trying to get my pitches working well."
The lack of play has left the team a little rusty; the Lady Lions committed eight errors in the two games against Lock Haven.
"We've got to make fewer errors," Corbin said.
"Our weak point right now is not playing," Rankin said. "We need more head-to-head play."
Tauriello agreed that the Lady Lions need more game play, but didn't place full blame for the team's problems on that fact.
"We shouldn't use that as an excuse," Tauriello said. "We've been making some errors that we shouldn't be making, regardless of having to practice indoors."
