New CCSG coordinator seeks communication

Collegian Staff Writer

Communicating with the new University administration and uniting with other student government bodies are two goals Brian Donaldson, newly elected coordinator for the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments, hopes to accomplish this year.

"(We need to) start a good working relationship with the new administration and make sure that they know that Penn State isn't just University Park," he said.

Also elected Saturday was Greg Lallie, the representative who will hold a non-voting seat on the University Board of Trustees. Ron Fischer and Ala Stanford were elected as University Student Advisory Board representatives. Brent Lapp and Brian Suwalski were elected as new faculty senators. The new officers begin their terms April 9.

Working together with the Undergraduate Student Government and the Graduate Student Association is another CCSG goal, Donaldson said.

"There are some problems that need to be worked out individually, but there are a few we can work on together," he said. "We're going to try to use student government for the good of all students."

A tuition gap between University Park and the Commonwealth campuses has been closed with enhancement and computer funds, and the council needs to ensure commonwealth students a voice in how this money is used, Donaldson said.

"We want to keep student input on what the funds are going to," Donaldson said.

The document, "We Are Penn State Too," first compiled by CCSG last March, outlined the minimum standards for all Commonwealth campuses. The council now needs to look at needs for individual campuses, Donaldson said.

For example, the Shenango Valley Campus houses an inadequate library while the Allentown Campus does not have a laboratory and the Mount Alto Campus does not have a gymnasium, he said.

Donaldson has "experience, knowledge and will be able to carry on making CCSG one of the three main governing bodies," said outgoing coordinator P.J. Sternberg.

"Brian's top priority has to be this new administration," Sternberg said. "Brian has the ability to carry our voice to the administration."

Sternberg called his administration an "upmost success."

"I feel I brought CCSG from a state from being an organization to being looked at as a governing body," he said.

Last year, CCSG had three major goals: to unite the government body, to revise "We are Penn State Too," and to address academic advising. Sternberg said the council accomplished the first two and has "set the ball rolling" to solve the advising problem at Commonwealth campuses.

"Brian has to protect what we already have and insist on more," Sternberg said.
