Spring Week kicks off today
Carnival, competitions highlight this year's event

Collegian Staff Writer

Organizers of Spring Week, which benefits the Big Brother/Big Sister Program of Centre County, are reorganizing the event's structure by adding a carnival and other events.

The theme for this year's Spring Week, starting today and ending April 7, is "The 80s in Review." Different coed groups will compete at different events throughout the week, said Dave Sawyer, chairman of Spring Week.

The Garbrick Amusement Company will be in State College today and Saturday evening in the Beaver Stadium parking lot, Sawyer said. The carnival will have rides such as a ferris wheel, and merry-go-round, he added.

Each group is sponsoring a booth at the carnival and the best booths will receive prizes, said Tracy Herth, public relations chairwoman. They will be judged on appearance and popularity, Herth said.

Other philanthropies during Spring Week include the Phi Psi 500 Saturday and the Phi Sig Superstars April 7, Sawyer said.

On April 2, 3 and 4, groups will perform skits and "Gods and Goddesses" routines during the evening in the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, Sawyer said. Gods and Goddesses routines are song, dance, and comedy performances that follow Spring Week's theme, he added.

The skits and routines will be judged by the week's organizers and finalists will compete during the Benefit Show on April 6, Herth said. The winning groups will receive trophies at the end of the show, she added.

The following events will occur during the week:

-- A chariot race and banner contest will be held on Fraternity Row and E. Fairmount Avenue. Each group makes their own chariot and banner for the event, which starts at 4 p.m. on April 3.

-- A spaghetti eating contest will take place at noon, April 4, on the HUB lawn. The event will be a race to see who eats two quarts of spaghetti the fastest.

-- The Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 4 and 5 in the HUB Ballroom.

-- The Lion Ambassadors will conduct tours during an open house of Old Main from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 5.

Next year he plans to change Spring Week into a two-week Spring Fest which will contain more events, Sawyer said.

"Next year we want to create two weeks the whole student body, alumni, faculty and community can look forward too," Sawyer said.
