Not harmful

We, the Sisters of the Lion and Brotherhood of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity, are writing to make a few clarifications and comments concerning the article "Some fraternities to remove their little-sister programs" appearing on the front page of the March 23 Collegian.

It may be acceptable to say that some little-sister programs might be phased out of fraternities because of liability problems; however, to state that these programs are harmful to the women who participate in them is nothing more than an opinion which was not found on the opinion page.

Our sisters' program consists of 38 women and is very active with the brotherhood. We do not view the experience as harmful in any way -- for brothers or sisters.

We have not lost track of the original purpose of little sisters which is to work together with brothers on activities such as rush, homecoming and other Greek events. What we have done is to expand that focus to include even more activities such as philanthropy, intramural sports, and community service. Notice "entertainment for the evening" is not included.

It is not fair to state that joining a sorority is a more fulfilling Greek and leadership experience than becoming a little sister. That depends on the person.

Our sisters have a strong organization amongst themselves with an executive council as well as various committees headed by chairpersons. The opportunity for leadership in a Greek setting is obviously still present.

Increased interaction among fraternities and sororities does not make little-sister programs unnecessary. On the contrary, little sisters often bridge the gap between the two already segregated groups, evident by the fact that we have sorority members in our organization.

Our national chapter no longer recognizes our sisters technically as "little sisters." The title used is Sisters of the Lion, which is more appropriate than "sweethearts." The relationship is one of a family based on brother-sister bond of respect, support and friendship.

Regardless of the name, this will never change.
