Organizers of the 8th annual Phi Sigma Kappa Superstars hope to have 70 teams participate, 30 more than last year, for events which will take place April 7 on the HUB lawn.
"This year it will be the biggest Superstars ever," said Ann Liker, co-chairwoman of the event.
Last year, Superstars raised $47,000 for the Vincent Scott Sandoe Fund, which benefits the Leukemia Society of America, said Co-Chairman Mark Hourvitz. Vincent Scott Sandoe was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, 501 S. Allen St. He died of leukemia in 1984, Hourvitz said.
Teams of five students will compete for trophies on April 7 in events such as the obstacle course, dizzy bats, tug-of-war and the joust, he said.
Most of the money for Superstars is earned through canning and not registration, said Robert Feldman, registration chairman.
Money is also raised through a raffle with prizes ranging from a pizza a week for a year from Domino's Pizza, to a VCR, Feldman said.
Since this is the second largest individual University fraternity philanthropy, Feldman said he hopes more alumni will attend the event.
Bands like Stolyn Hours, Ruder Than You and Tongue Tied will perform during the day on the HUB lawn, Hourvitz said.
An evening kick-off party is planned for April 4 at Phi Sigma Kappa for all team members and at 8 p.m. on April 5 the fraternity will hold a spirit competition, Feldman said.
