Director from International Labor Office to speak at trade conference

Collegian Staff Writer

The effects of Eastern European turmoil on American jobs will be addressed by a director from the International Labor Office as part of a trade union conference for students.

Steven Schlossberg, director of the United States' branch of the International Labor Office, will speak at the Labor Studies Club's 20th annual Student Trade Union Conference today in 301 HUB.

The International Labor Office is a worldwide watchdog for industry and a communicator between labor and management.

Schlossberg will discuss the effects on American workers when trade barriers are lifted in Europe, said Dick Hindel, adviser to the Labor Studies Club.

In 1992, the European Economic Community, a conglomerate of Western European countries, will eliminate tariffs among themselves and create a type of united economic market.

"It's something that all students can benefit from since most are going on to the working world," he said. "It's going to affect them."

A variety of speakers will address labor and management relations and union members will speak with students, Hindel said.

The conference was created during a period when Vietnam, civil rights and women's rights were all big issues and related to union rights, Hindel said.

Scheduled speakers and topics include the following:

-- Randy Canale, Pennsylvania Coordinator of the International Association of Machinists: "The Eastern Airlines Story" at 10 a.m.

-- Steven Schlossberg: "Eastern European Turmoil -- Does it Affect Your Job?" at 11: 15 a.m.

-- Glenn Plummer from United Food & Commercial Workers: "The Future of Labor" at 1:30 p.m.

-- William Reynolds, Lobbyist of the United Mine Workers of America: "Pittston and Beyond" at 2:30 p.m.

-- Debate: "Unions in the 1990s: Are They Necessary?" at 3:30 p.m.
